The Anchorage Chapter is one of 19 chapters statewide that make up the AFSCME/ASEA Local 52 membership, also known as the State of Alaska General Governmental Unit (GGU), a designation given for the purpose of collective bargaining with the state. ASEA is the Alaska State Employees Association, and AFSCME is the international union with which we are affiliated. There are about 7400 "Local 52" members statewide, with seasonal variations of a few hundred members. The Anchorage Chapter comprises about 40% of the union members, with about 3,600 members.

AFSCME = American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, an affiliate of AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. Our membership became affiliated with AFSCME as ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 in October, 1987. AFSCME represents about 1.8million people throughout the U.S. and its territories.
GGU = General Government Unit, the designation given by the state for our employee group for bargaining purposes. GGU is one of 12 State of Alaska bargaining units.
